Advanced Pilot Skills

UPRT Training

UPRT Flying Academy Prague provides upset prevention and recovery training designed to build practical confidence, sharpen awareness, and prepare pilots to respond correctly when the aircraft leaves the normal flight envelope.

Program Overview

Overview of the UPRT

UPRT stands for airplane upset prevention and recovery training and combines theoretical knowledge with flight instruction to provide the competencies required to prevent and recover from situations in which an airplane unintentionally exceeds the parameters for line operation or training.

To introduce different levels of UPRT at various stages of a professional pilot's career, EASA published Opinion No 06/2017 and continues revising the associated acceptable means of compliance and guidance material connected to Annex I (Part-FCL) to Regulation (EU) No 1178/2011.

Training Objective

Course Aim

The aim of the Advanced Upset Prevention Recovery Training is to amplify knowledge and skills in upset prevention and especially upset recovery, with the final objective of exposing students to the psychological and physiological aspects usually experienced during a dynamic upset. A course completion certificate is issued at the end of the training.

The advanced UPRT course includes at least 5 hours of theoretical instruction and at least 3 hours of dual flight instruction in an airplane. The program is intended to strengthen resilience in the face of stress, disorientation, and rapid attitude changes.

Class- or type-related UPRT during class or type rating training addresses the specific characteristics of the relevant class or type of airplane.

Who Needs UPRT Training?

If you completed your training before December 20, 2019 and plan to continue with a type rating qualification, you need to undergo the Advanced UPRT course under FCL.745.A.

Entry Requirements

  • PPL(A) license or higher with valid SEP (Land) qualification, or enrollment in an Integrated ATPL course
  • Valid Class 2 Medical
Course Structure

UPRT Curriculum

The program combines academic preparation with practical in-aircraft exercises focused on recognition, prevention, and disciplined recovery technique.

Academic Training

  • UPRT philosophy
  • Criticality of academic and practical knowledge, especially angle of attack awareness
  • Understanding what a flight upset is and is not
  • How to avoid flight upsets through awareness, TEM, and automation mode management
  • How to recognize flight upsets by understanding what normal looks like and why pilots lose situational awareness
  • How to recover from flight upsets using structured recovery strategies
  • Review of counter-intuitive recovery actions and associated challenges
  • Managing startle and fear as a major operational challenge
  • Simplifying flight upset recovery and building resilience through layers of protection

On Aircraft Training

  • Steep and maximum rate turns
  • Slow flight at Vs1g in level, turning, climbing, and descending configurations
  • Stalling in clean, power-on, power-off, accelerated, and go-around configurations
  • Upset recovery from nose-high conditions in level and banked attitudes at high and low speed
  • Upset recovery from nose-low conditions in level and banked attitudes at high and low speed
  • Upset recovery from high bank angle, overbank, maneuver, and ballistic vertical profiles
  • Trim runaway recovery, incipient spin, spiral dive, and wake turbulence recoveries
  • Human factors including situational awareness, startle and stress response, TEM, and CRM in the GA environment
